Mideast Wars Gaza American Contractors

From the moment of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’s launch in May, reporters Julia Frankel and Sam Mednick have worked tirelessly to develop strong sources close to, and inside, the organization and its associated entities. Their hard work paid off when two whistleblowers agreed to share exclusive testimonies, videos and other evidence that illustrate chaos and gunfire at these sites as Palestinians desperately seek food. Their meticulous reporting, paired with video producer Luka Garratt’s expert crafting of the video narrative, catapulted the story to the top of news agendas and resonated across the media spectrum.

Getting this complicated and highly sensitive story ready for publication involved many different people from across AP. Every word, video and photo was forensically examined. Ted Anthony and Lee Keath provided masterful editing skills, Phil Holm built the graphics, legal, standards, regional and senior leadership offered essential input, and the global video production and digital teams ensured the finished product sang and was widely disseminated across AP’s platforms.

The judges were impressed by the depth of the reporting and visual storytelling of the presentation.

For their determination, commitment and giving the AP a major scoop on this critical aspect of the war in Gaza, Frankel, Mednick and Garratt are clear Best of the Week winners.
