Integrace & LeadingAge are Pleased to Announce the 2017 Proxmire Award Honoree
Sylvia Mackey met her husband, Baltimore Colt John Mackey, when they were both students at Syracuse University. In 1963, they graduated and were married in December of the same year. Soon after, John became a tight end for the Baltimore Colts, and remained in the NFL for 10 years.
In 2006, John was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and Sylvia finally had answers concerning his recent strange behavior. Sylvia soon realized that the cost of care could put families in financial ruin. This led her to launch what became the “88” plan, named after her husband’s jersey number from his time with the Colts. The plan provides $88,000 annually for care at an assisted living community and $50,000 per year for adult day care. John Mackey passed away in 2011. Sylvia continues to advocate for continued research and support for families.
